Geodetic Domo: Cork at the Heart of Architectural Design

The Role of Cork in Thermal and Acoustic Comfort

Geodetic Domo is a leading Portuguese company specializing in the design and construction of geodesic domes, structures renowned for their strength, versatility, and energy efficiency. The company’s mission is based on creating architectural solutions that combine aesthetics, functionality, and environmental responsibility, raising the standards of sustainable construction.

Nobilis Cork

Within this vision, Geodetic Domo has recently developed the Nobilis Cork model, a project that combines the unique aesthetic of geodesic domes with the exceptional properties of expanded cork. This model serves as a prime example of how architectural innovation can go hand in hand with the use of natural materials, creating spaces with high comfort and a reduced ecological footprint.

The architectural design of the geodesic dome uses significantly less material than traditional constructions, reducing environmental impact and construction waste, resulting in a more conscious and sustainable building. Furthermore, the spherical shape of geodesic domes provides unmatched resistance to external forces, such as strong winds, rain, and snow, thanks to their aerodynamic form, making these structures ideal for a variety of climatic conditions, including the most extreme.

A Story of Heritage and Sustainability

Thanks to its low thermal conductivity, cork is one of the best natural insulators. It stands out as a recyclable material with excellent thermal and acoustic insulation, achieving high performance even at just 6 cm thickness, while also ensuring durability and strength for structures. When combined with other materials, this performance translates into year-round comfort, maintaining stable temperatures between 20 °C and 25 °C without artificial climate control.

According to Geodetic Domo’s CEO, Adolfo Stuart, the relentless search for materials that combine sustainability with technical performance led to the selection of cork from Amorim Cork Solutions as a central element of the project. In addition to its excellent thermal and acoustic insulation, cork provides robustness, durability, and low environmental impact, while also being a natural, locally sourced product, factors that were decisive for its integration into the Nobilis Cork model.

A Milestone in Sustainable Architecture

The partnership between Geodetic Domo and Amorim Cork Solutions has resulted in a pioneering architectural solution that combines innovation, functionality, and sustainability. The Nobilis Cork stands out as a landmark in sustainable architecture in Portugal, highlighting the potential of expanded cork as a versatile, efficient, and aesthetically distinctive material.

Its high thermal performance and sound insulation properties help reduce energy consumption and create more serene environments, while the use of natural and recyclable materials reflects the companies’ commitment to more responsible construction. Moreover, cork gives the domes a unique visual identity, allowing them to integrate harmoniously with the natural surroundings and to shape the future of contemporary architecture.
